Welcome to Ember!

We're thrilled to have you on board.

To make sure you're off to the right start, we've put together a quick onboarding guide with some essential tips to make sure you get the most out of Ember once you have created your account.

When you first head to the "Home" tab or the "Transactions" tab, you will see the following screen:

Just like it says, the first step to setting up your Ember account is connecting your bank account(s)!

How to connect your bank account

To connect your bank account to Ember you should either hit the "Connect your bank" button or head to the "Settings" tab.

Once you're in the "Settings" tab, you should click on "Manage connections".

If you don't have a bank account setup for your business yet, that's fine! You can add in any relevant sales or expenses manually, so that you're all up to date.

Categorising Transactions

So you've connected your bank account, what now?

The next step in setting up your Ember account will be to categorise your transactions to date. Once this is done you will have an accurate picture of how your business is performing!

As a sole trader, it's not uncommon to have a bank account with both personal & business transactions going through it.

To make sure any personal transactions are not included in the financial reporting for your business, please categorise these as "Personal" and then click "Mark as reviewed".

Any transactions relevant to your business should be categorised by the category most relevant to them.

In some instances, you may need to split a transaction between personal & business categories if there is both a business & a personal element. We have an article on how to do that here

What Next?

You've categorised your transactions to date and are almost ready to go. There are a couple of other points that will need to be finished to ensure your account is ready to go!

  1. Make sure your business details are up to date under the Settings tab. You can edit or add the required information under the "Business" section of the "Settings" tab.

  2. Let us know whether you're already registered for Self Assessment! You can do this under "Settings > Your Information".

  3. If you're VAT registered, make sure to Hook up your HMRC account. When hooked up correctly, your VAT returns should pull through under the "Taxes" tab.
